Review of The Cardinal (1963) by Paul D — 22 Sep 2010
Under Otto Preminger's direction a young Catholic priest confronts the mayor turnarounds during the first half of the 20th Century and his own personal conflicts as he rises within the ranks of the Church. The title is a in a way spoiler and the fact the it all is told in flashbacks. Slip almost to Soap at times...
If it had been made a decade later it would have been a mini-series, that would have had an even longer running time than the current 175 minutes.
Curiosly the movie isn't tiresome at any point, one watches it through easily, even if it stamps at times more than one time too much...
The amazing supporting cast saves much of the film: John Saxon, John Huston, Burgess Meredith, Raf Vallone, Ossie Davis, Josef Meinrad and Romy Schneider.
