Review of The Canyons (2013) by Tom V — 03 Aug 2013
Really didn't know what to think of this coming in. With the troubled production and the obvious drama with Lindsey Lohan, my expectations were low. Critics seemed to universally pan the movie so my expectations were even lower.
The story is about Tara (Lohan), Christian (James Deen), Ryan (Nolan Gerard Funk) Gina (Amanda Brooks) and Cythia (Tenielle Houston). Ryan is a struggling actor, Tara helps to land him the role on a new film.
Christian is dating Tara and has his doubts about her relationship with Ryan. What follows is a very slow burn of a thriller. At times, I was wondering what was the point of everything. Then in the last 20 or so minutes, the film finally starts to come together.
On the surface, this film seems fairly straight forward, but then as I pieced together everything, there are a lot of subplots going on regarding how all the characters know each other. In a way, a very good Neo-Noir type thriller.
Though it loses some points since it felt like things took too long to get going, I did enjoy it in the end. 3 stars.
