Review of The Canyons (2013) by Matty S — 12 Aug 2013
Wow. Not that I was expecting much but it feels like I saw a different movie than the one resulting in the 21 to 24% ranking. While not a great movie, it was not a bad film either. Aside from the ethical concerns of what is clearly exploitive stunt casting of a obviously damaged actress with a current Internet Male Porn Star sensation -- this is an interesting perspective on the other side of Hollywood fame/ambition.
The attempt to correlate the "death of cinema" to the plot never works. However, Lohan and Deen both give strong performances. We've seen this type of story before, but the style is there and it did hold my attention.
...Something that many big cinema blockbusters fail to do. The Canyons is not deserving of all the critic-bashing. Nor is it a fully successful movie. It was, however, an interesting character study.
