Review of The Canal (2014) by Ethan S — 12 Nov 2014
David and his wife are happily married, he is an archivist and sees some old footage of a 1902 crime that occurred in the house they have lived in for 5 years, a husband, in a jealous rage stabbed his cheating wife to death then dumped her body in the canal.
Soon he suspects his wife is cheating on him and then things really spiral out of control. His wife turns up dead in the canal, then he starts seeing a strange man in and around his house, are these ghosts of the past or is he slowly going crazy or is there something more sinister happening.
The trailer for this film was creepy, but, after watching this film, I was quite disappointed. David is a feeble man who is not someone I felt for at all, once weird things start happening no one decides it is best to alert the authorities about his strange behaviour instead of just telling him to seek help over his strange ways of grieving for his deceased wife.
The final 10 minutes are the best part of the film, too bad I had to sit through the uneven and mostly boring first 80 minutes. A lot of people might end up liking this, it has good imagery and is well shot.
