Will ferrell makes a welcome return to comedy but the film is a bit of a mess overall. Zach Galifianakis is quite funny as the quiet loser who finally comes full circle to become a contender. the real issue the film doesn't work is the large miss ratio of the jokes. the writing isn't 100% and most of the jokes come from the talent in the leads. The is sadly a lot like Step Brothers and won't appeal to everyone who is accustomed with ferrells style of humour.
Jay Roach has quite the checkered career with lots of hits and misses and this sits firmly in the middle. the issue is the film really isn't as funny as it could of been, Galifianakis is a funny person naturally but here he seems to have created a character you can't come to like. He seems to lack the right balance of jokes vs character moments which helped meet the parents. The film is quite funny at times and just odd in other moments.
Will Ferrell is actually quite unlikable in the lead and its this issue I couldn't come to like the characters or the film. good for a night in but its nothing more then that, don't feel bad for not liking it as much as something more superior like anchorman.
