I love Mary Stuart Masterson, so I had to see this knowing that she directed it. The Cake Eaters was an OK film. The whole "falling in love with someone who is dying from a disability" story has been told before. "Dying Young" or "Untamed Heart" come to mind.

This film was very frustrating for me. There is some great acting talent here. Bruce Dern, Elizabeth Ashley... Kristen Stewart did a great job at playing Georgia, I will give her that. Aaron Stanford also did well playing Beagle. They had good chemistry and made the audience gravitate in on them. But then it just got frustrating...

I can see where and how this film could have been great. The story was a good one, but it spun off in too many directions, not really explaining any of them well. And it was like someone said " Oh well we're almost to an hour and a half, we should just end it ....here..." And everything is left all unraveled. You get no closure to any of the relationships or know what happens to any of them. That was such a disappointment for me.

The Cake Eaters isn't a horrible film. It's disappointing to watch, only because you can see the shadow of something great, that they only scratched the surface of.
