Review of The Cake Eaters (2007) by Matt L — 11 Jul 2009
Masterson's directing doesn't quite push the actors into inhabiting the reality of their characters--they fall just short of *being* the people, landing somewhere nearby. it's not that she doesn't orchestrate strong performances, she does.
but the chemistry, actor to actor and director to actor, just doesn't quite gel 100% of the time. it's like they're acting off each other instead of acting with each other. stewart does well enough but doesn't stay in her character's disability the full time, which is distracting.
the names to be unbelievable as well--guys named 'beagle' and 'easy'? seems very novelesque, though the story in and of itself is very solid.
