Review of The Cake Eaters (2007) by Moya W — 24 Feb 2010
I've wanted to see this movie for quite a while now and even though I don't regret having seen it, it still ended up leaving me disappointed.
It was a different role for Kristen Stewart, having a drunk-sounding accent of a disabled fifteen-year-old, I must praise her for it. Even though she didn't manage to keep the accent throughout the whole movie it was still hard to comprehend what she said in most of the scenes, and if that was the whole point of the accent she did a really good job.
This movie's storyline didn't really come clear to me, sometimes it even felt like it didn't have one. The message was a bit too vague and obscure, and dramaturgically the movie was unnecessarilly complicated. The movie was slow from the very beginning until the end. There never seemed to be any happening or excitement for that matter.
The director Mary Stuart Masterson managed to take up important subjects such as life and disability, love and growing up. These subjects are so important and intriguing, but still she doesn't manage to put them in a movie so the audience can understand.
It's sad to see a movie that could've had so much potential, but it ending up failing. It actually puts a smile on my face just knowing that it's a one hour and twenty-six minute movie, because I don't know if I'd managed if it had been any longer!
