Review of The Caine Mutiny (1954) by Dryorophus — 15 Nov 2010
Not Bogart's first paranoid performance (Treasure of the Sierra Madre) but easily his best. New captain enters the hellhole of the Caine, a broken-down minesweeper with a broken down crew. Are Queeg's tactics strict? Or are they crazy?
My favorite parts of this movie weren't even the ships episodes, but the trial, where the episodes are replayed. Only this time twisted in perception to where even those of us in the crazy room might be convinced the actions were rational.
My favorite actor of the flick is not even Bogart. As excellent as he was Fred MacMurray wins the David Fincher speed-dialogue award and gets to be an intellectual hero and a raving pussy in the same 2 hours. His scene with Jose Ferrer in an interrogation room is as brilliant a rapport as anything in The West Wing.
Don't follow leaders. Watch the parking meters.
