Review of The Caine Mutiny (1954) by Karl — 02 Jul 2008
This is one of my all-time favorites. A ramshackle of a naval ship is run poorly and a new shipmate is thoroughly unimpressed. The captain retires and Captain Queeg played by Humphrey Bogart takes command.
At first. order is restored and all seems well, until Queeg's eccentricities or paranoia takes hold? Finally, it becomes too much and Queeg is relieved of command on the ship and the man on the ship that made the decision, played by Van Johnson, is subjected to a court martial.
Queeg as a witness breaks down, but it isn't Hollywoodized or cliche. It's believable and a gripping story throughout.
