Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Paul R — 07 Dec 2013
On release The Cabin in the Woods really had mixed reviews and I tried my hardest not to read any of them, all I knew is that a lot of people 5 star loved it and a lot of people really really didn't, and I saw plenty of poor scores.
I knew I just had to see this film. A day after my first and second viewing I found it very difficult to find anything wrong with it at all, and I still feel the same after numerous watches. From the very opening scene as the big bold red letters THE CABIN IN THE WOODS hit the screen I knew, from that very moment, I would love this film.
Not only is it extremely impressive how many nods to horror films there are but this film succeeds by it not just being a gimmick and a homage, it works perfectly well for even someone who has never even seen a horror movie before.
It's funny, fresh and a film with a difference. With the insistance of Hollywood churning out the incessant barrage of sequels, prequels, reimaginings, adaptions and worst of all "remakes" (shudder) it is a real delight to see something as imaginative as this.
Mr. Whedon, Thank you. You certainly made 2012 a year to remember.
