Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Nikky A — 07 Nov 2015
It could have been scary, sexy, satirical, or insanely stupid, but it managed to be none of the above. You can't accuse 'Cabin in the Woods' as being haphazard because they are so deliberate.
Obviously, it is meant to take every modern horror movie and parody it, but it is so disparate. They either try too hard or not enough, but the composite isn't very entertaining. Combining elements from 'The Ring' (or even the Japanese 'Ringu'), David Lynch's 'Lost Highway,' (and the ripoff counterpart, 'Vacancy'), just about any zombie flick, and the whole 'Paranormal.
..' series, the instigators of a contrived horror weekend out in the middle of nowhere are deliberations where Hollywood gripes against itself. The whole picture may try to draw from 'The Truman Show' and attempt to be horror's answer to 'Galaxy Quest,' (also featuring SIgourney Weaver) but nothing seems to gel or stick--except the graphics, which are dead on.
