Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Nicholas H — 19 Feb 2016
Watched this on the advice of friends and I can see its intent to poke fun at its own genre and, in that regard, it makes itself little different than every modern horror (or blockbuster action) film, with their studio-mandated comedy beats.
You don't get points for making your protagonists generic copies of every other person ever killed in a slasher movie just because you point it out. This movie tries very hard to be clever but feels much like every other jumbled, meandering horror plot on the market.
The best thing I can say about it is that it hasn't devolved as far into being torture-porn as some of the genre but it often feels like the writers were laughing at the entertainment tastes of their audience.
Of course it follows that if you enjoy most mass-market horror movies, you'll feel right at home.
