Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Hugo P — 11 May 2014
The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most original, creative movies I have seen in a long time. The movie is a mixture of Horror, Comedy, and Satire all put in one entertaining, fun movie. If you are a fan of Horror you should have seen this a long time ago.
It is the deconstruction of the horror genre. It pokes fun at horror movies, most notably Sam Raimi's Evil Dead. It is hard to review this movie without spoiling anything in the movie. All the performances are great.
Chris Hemsworth who is known for his Thor role, is great, you don't see Thor you see the character he is portraying. My problems with the movie are that there are coincidences. Towards the end there is this thing, that the character interact with and it brings the question, why would anyone have that there.
It makes no sense putting that object there that does a specific thing. I didn't really like the ending, I felt underwhelmed. Other than that it is a great movie. The writing is really smart, I like Joss Whedon and he did a good job with the writing part of this movie.
Drew Goddrad does a great job directing. It is smoothly directed. The comedy works in the movie. It looks like the comedy won't work but it does. It makes fun of the horror cliches we see in movie.
There are two parts of this movie. One of them is the actual horror, the other part is more light hearted but still has a dark tone. People who don't like horror movies and think that this is scary, don't worry, it's not scary.
There are a few creepy images, and a few jump scares every now and then that are effective, but not enough to scare you senseless and you won't be able to sleep at night. This is a great movie, it is a must see for horror fans, and anyone who likes movies, really.
