Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Shaun B — 14 Jan 2014
Cabin in the Woods is one of the best genre pictures to come out in the last few years. In both paying homage to and poking fun at the horror genre, it elevates itself to the top of the genre along with similar films like Shawn of the Dead.
To give away any of the plot would be to ruin the journey for all who have yet to venture into the metaphysical Cabin in the Woods world. And the journey is the best part of the film. Whedon and Goddard's penultimate vision dares to tear the horror genre apart but then build it back even stronger. You may never look at another horror film the same way again.
Two elements which elevated this film above others is its clever writing which takes you places you never expect, and the humour. Without the humour this film would not have worked. Its humour is what takes you by the arm and guides you through its gleefully rediculous story instead of bailing on it . And the films style probably owes as much to Quentin Tarantino as it does to 70's and 80's horror films.
In a modern horror world filled with hard hearted slasher films and torture porn, we have been given hope that the genre has not gone stale, and can be dragged back out of that cabin in the woods...........
