Review of The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (2009) by Gökhan A — 27 Apr 2009
Of course, this is another Hollywood sequel, so when it is compared to the original "Butterfly Effect" starring Ashton Kutcher, the movie falls short. Also, many of the main plot points don't make sense when compared to the original, however:
As a movie in itself, I rather enjoyed it. I believe the only way it is considered a sequel, or a spin-off movie, is the way it didn't explain how and when he got his 'gift'. Those who are familiar with the Butterfly Effect franchise are well aware that it is about time travel. The main character in this has been using his gift for several years.
The way it works, is basically a human time machine, he had to set the time and date in his head, and away he went. You see in the first two films, the main character had to see something in order to go back to that time, something that was taken, or written in that time period. So in a lot of ways, the way this film works does not make sense with that fact. Unless of course, he figured out a way to harness that power, and move back in time at will.
As I said before, as a stand-alone film, I thought it was pretty good. Not perfect, but good. It had a great twist at the end as well. In all honesty, the film should not have been called "The Butterfly Effect," but something else entirely.
