Review of The Butterfly Effect (2004) by Robert H — 22 May 2011
The Butterfly Effect isn't looked upon very highly by many film critics but I'm not exactly sure why. Ashton Kutcher puts forth a pretty decent performance and the concept is presented in a well told story that is both understandable and enjoyable.
I'll admit that certain aspects of the film could be better told and some things don't quite ring true but for a main stream time travel semi-mind fuck of a film, The Butterfly Effect is solid enough to warrant a recommendation.
Of course, I was more interested in seeing how the changes would affect the future rather than the overall story that was being told and I have a feeling I'm not the only one.
Considering how poorly time travel can be handled, The Butterfly Effect could have turned out much much worse. Instead, by keeping things fairly simple, the viewer isn't left in the dark and can confidently go along for the ride without having to worry too much about getting lost along the way.
