Review of The Butterfly Effect (2004) by Ed Fucking H — 26 Apr 2011
I put off watching this movie for seven years due to the fact that I was extremely sceptical about this for numerous, obvious reasons. Kept on hearing good things about it though, so put my hatred of Ashton Kutcher and mainstream Hollywood movies in general aside and gave it a watch.
I was pleasantly surprised. The film has an awesome concept and is well executed. I do think that the acting is spotty at times and the movie could have been better with a different cast, but that being said I'm glad a Hollywood movie that was fairly successful didn't shy away from uncomfortable subject matter for a change, and actually required it's audience to put forth some thought to fully appreciate it.
The version I saw had the happy ending also which left a bad taste in my mouth. Upon watching the sad ending on youtube afterwards I really wish that was the only ending filmed, but I undersstand why they would have used the happier version.
Not a masterpiece by any means and I've seen several films tackling similar subject matter do it much better, but definently an above average effort overall. Eric Bress and Mackye Gruber did a great job with the directio and, the acting while not perfect surprised me for the most part.
Recommended for fans of Psychological Thrillers.
