"Based on a true Story" is Hollywoods way of saying the movie is pretty much fiction! Almost all of the motivations and conflicts that give the movie any interesting scenes never happened in the real life of the butler.
His father was not shot, his mother was not raped, the older son never existed and the younger son came back safely from Vietnam. These are just the tip of the iceberg. It's a decent movie, but it's so far from the true story it might as well be Star Wars!
