Review of The Butler (2013) by Anthony D — 14 Feb 2014
I give it a D+ as a drama and and A- if they redo it as a 'black', pardon the pun, 'comedy'.
Suffering from at least 2 big movie faux pas:
The Butler IS the passive protagonist where the supporting players, including Jane Fonda, as Nancy Reagan, in a way too short cameo, is more interesting to watch.
Also, The Butler's numerous voice overs 'telling ' us too much of the story and showing us very little other than overhearing the world's happenings through The Butler's ears.
To make matters worse, when Oprah says to her Blank Panther son,.
With the ever present music pounding to a crescendo,.
'Everything you are is because of that Butlah'.
Falls flat and works better as a comic line rather than the powerful feeling intended.
