Review of The Butler (2013) by Trevor H — 06 Mar 2014
Hugely disappointing myopic of the life and times of Cecil Gaines, a White House butler who grew up on a cotton farm in Alabama and became a servant to eight American presidents. The film tries to do too much by covering the period of Gaines' entire life, which leaves the viewer with a permanent feeling that no great subject will be explored, merely skated over.
The director seems to have been caught between a rock and a hard place as he provides an insight into Gaines' private life and his White House life, too. The result is that he delves deeply into neither.
Dissatisfying.
