Review of The Butler (2013) by Missmickey1 M — 22 Apr 2014
Pleasant enough film to watch but didn't offer much. I just didn't find a purpose for this film, in other words, why was it made? It was clearly not just to tell one man's story (The Butler) as it was pretty inaccurate when compared to his real life.
I think they attempted to make it about African American (rights) history, but it was very very glossy, it essentially just said 'this happened', it did not explore anything further. This included the presidents, they were there for 5 minutes then it was on to the next president, leaving their characters lacking depth.
I also felt like they were using this man's story as a cover to make a statement about African American history, albeit they did not do that effectively, if at all. It also just seemed like one of those films where they just advertise a whole bunch of famous people being in it to try & get people to see it.
