Review of The Butler (2013) by Edmund C — 08 Jan 2015
Based on the true story of a dedicated African-American butler who served at the White House for over 3 decades, and was smack bang in the middle of civil rights struggles in the US. He grew up on a cotton farm where his father was shot by a white man while speaking up for his wife.
This film reminded me that as recently as in the 60s, there were 'White' and 'Colored' sections in restaurants and toilets. Forest Whitaker shines, especially towards the end, after his character lives to see Obama take the presidency in 2008.
Poignant scene : when he brings out the small tokens each President had presented him during the course of his service, including the necktie from JFK. The make-up is excellent and so is the actor who played his son.
We also get to see quite a number of familiar faces among the cast!
