Review of The Butcher Boy (1998) by Kevin D — 31 Aug 2007
Man those accents are tough to follow. To me it was like watching a film in a language I'd never heard before, subtitles not included. But this is goddamn great. Francie Brady is a clownish, self-righteous, perversely smart but utterly tragic character.
An orphaned brat who's watched too much TV and who chafes in the hypocrisies of the social world, he alienates his few friends and begins to live in a vivid solipsist fantasy. Jordan's film is achingly beautiful, satirical and strange.
But Sinead O'Connor as the Virgin Mary? That's nuts.
