The 'Burbs (1989) -- [6.0] -- A gray comedy (because it's not that dark) that achieves its low aim. It's a "bottle" show, taking place with a small number of actors in one general location, so it really fails or succeeds on the strength of its ensemble.

They're just okay. Hanks is always good, but he doesn't have enough to work with. Rick Ducommun helps bring a little sizzle to the ensemble, but Carrie Fisher's talents are completely wasted.

The rest of the players seem preoccupied with mugging for the camera, so the cast never achieves any chemistry. With a better group, it could have been much better. Still, it's light and fluffy enough for an afternoon's entertainment.

Jerry Goldsmith's score is, as always, good. It's also great to see Joe Dante regulars Robert Picardo and Dick Miller, even if it's just for one scene.
