Review of The 'Burbs (1989) by Hunter D — 10 Mar 2011
THE 'BURBS is REAR WINDOW by way of Joe Dante with a bit of Spielbergian suburban weirdness. I love how Dante is able to take classic horror tropes and filter them through his own bizarre sense of humor. He is a talent that never ran out, it's a crime that his latest film, THE HOLE, has failed to find a U.S. distributor.
It's also worth noting that THE 'BURBS reminds me of a time when Tom Hanks was funny. It seems getting taken seriously as a dramatic talent sometimes involve having your funny bone removed. Here's hoping Hanks finds it again someday.
