Review of The 'Burbs (1989) by Matt M — 13 Jan 2013
I think the reason I love this movie so much is because it will forever remind me of my childhood and the neighborhood I grew up in. Me and my friends would always watch this movie when we were young on Saturday nights. Even today, almost 15 years later, the film still holds up.
Tom Hanks, usually quite the scene-stealer, is matched in every scene he has with Dern, Fisher and Ducommun. They all play off of each other amazingly.
If one has seen the movie as many times as I have (trust me a lot) you really notice how intricate the film is. The blocking, the props, score and the more subtle aspects of filmmaking are really thought through here. Great direction by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Piranha).
The film really is a great blend of my to favorite genres - horror and comedy. As soon as we plunge ourselves into the Universal logo till the end credits, I'm completely transfixed as these people's daily routines eventually turn into felonies and explosives.
