Review of The 'Burbs (1989) by Justin A — 09 Oct 2015
It's supposed to be a comedy, but it's really not that funny. In fact, a lot of the written jokes fall flat. What makes the movie so fun is Tom Hanks. It's really difficult not to enjoy Tom Hanks acting goofy.
Most of the laughs in the movie come from him just making awkward facials or just acting uncomfortable. Joe Dante seems to try to duplicate what he did with Gremlins, by having quiet suburbia terrorized by some horror element.
It doesn't quite work the same though. It's a pretty good movie, and one I grew up watching as a kid, but I feel like there are better movies of this nature as well.
