Review of The Buddy Holly Story (1978) by Kelly B — 04 Jun 2009
In the past decade, there has been several Musician/Bio-Pics filmed, but "Buddy Holly Story" still remains one of the best! Gary Busey's performance is terrific, and he was one of the first actors to actually play the music and sings the songs.
Which, undoubtedly, helps the audience involve themselves in the performance. The other stand-out is Steve Rash's direction!! Known for doing music videos, "Buddy Holly Story" was his first feature.
The opening "roller derby rink" scene was shot to perfection! Also, throughout the film you often feel like you're a fan attending a "Buddy Holly" concert instead of watching a movie.
This is the films greatest strength and weakness combined. It all depends on the viewer, I guess. Overall- classic film that will be enjoyed by "Buddy Holly" fans, and will surely turn others that way.
