Review of The Buddy Holly Story (1978) by Terri H — 11 Dec 2008
Much better than 'La Bamba'. This movie is a great example of an actor making you feel connected to a character. Busey's Buddy Holly is a great character, and by the end of the film you really feel like he's a good friend.
My only real complaint is the ending. It's no secret how any movie about The Day the Music Died is going to end, but in 'La Bamba' it was a very moving scene, showing the reactions of family and friends, and it's almost enough to move you to tears.
.. and that's with Lou Diamond Phillips' lackluster acting as Ritchie. In 'The Buddy Holly Story', Holly is much more likable and seems entirely real; yet his death is trivialized by having text flash on-screen stating that he died.
Not really moving, just incredibly anti-climatic.
