Its flaws notwithstanding, and despite its technical imperfections, this is one of the most authentically independent American films to appear in years, aptly awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics in Vienna for "its bold exploration of yearning and grief and for its radical departure from dominant tendencies in current American filmmaking.
" It's also a document of ascesis, of the self-sublimation of self-absorption.
