Review of The Brothers Solomon (2007) by Adriane K — 11 Mar 2008
Saturday Night Live's Will Forte and Will Arnett star as the title characters, John and Dean Solomon, a couple of moronic and naive brothers who team up to get a woman pregnant after their father (Lee Majors) goes into a coma. The doctor tells the Brothers Solomon that sometimes people who have something to live for tend to hang-on longer to see that thing through. This thing is, obviously, living to see a grandson.
Now the two dumbasses go out into the dating pool to find a woman to fill with their seed. The problem is that the brothers were raised in the Artic and were schooled at home so hey have the social skills of Helen Keller.
A large portion of the jokes from the film come in the fact that these two are clueless and manage to do and say things that we, as normal socially aware people, would never ever think to do or say.
The fellas end up finding a surrogate mother named Janine played by Kristin Wiig. For "x" amount of dollars she will shoot the kid out and the Solomon brothers will take care of it.
The script is written by Forte, the film is directed by Bob Odenkirk ("Let's Go To Prison"), and the supporting cast is loaded with talent including Chi McBride ("Waiting..."), Bill Hader ("Superbad"), Jenna Fischer (TV's "The Office"), and Malin Akerman ("The Heartbreak Kid"). Now despite the talent behind this new comedy, it lacks in several areas. There just aren't enough laughs, however there are a few times that had me laughing pretty hard. Unfortunately, it was few and not a lot.
All in all, a comedy that doesn't live up to the talent involved.
