Review of The Brothers Solomon (2007) by Newt C — 21 Aug 2008
An inoffensive, silly little trifle. Which is unfortunate given some of the talent involved. I blame Forte's script, which is just kind of there. It's not horrible, but it's particularly noteworthy for being completely NOT noteworthy.
There are a few gems spread throughout, and Arnett puts on his game face, as well as director Odenkirk whose performance is the true standout for me (he's SOOO pissed off - I've never laughed more at someone's aggravation).
I sometimes like to watch DVD commentaries when I rent them, but this commentary completely turned me off. I had to stop, unfortunately because Arnett was being a complete and utter idiot. I respect the guy's chops as a comedic actor, but he bitches about studio notes and structure and motivation in comedy movies.
He said at one point, "People just want to laugh." Well, Will, if that was the case they'd just go watch f'n standup. Film, even comedies, have certain rules and expectations and if you want to flaunt them, go ahead.
But don't pretend that you know better. This is the reason that standup comedians generally make shitty screenwriters: they think "it's funny" is enough justification for anything, even if it doesn't make any narrative sense.
