Review of The Brothers Solomon (2007) by Eric K — 29 Mar 2009
I heard plenty of bad things about the Brothers Solomon before I finally caught the movie. And although, obviously the premise of the movie is foolish and predictable I found the movie to be both charming and funny.
My favorite aspect of the film is how upbeat and kindhearted it remains for its entirety. This is an aspect that lacks in another higher profile film about two man-children, Step Brothers. I remember throughout Step Brothers, finding most of the character downright unlikeable and harsh. I never once found myself rooting or Will Ferrel or John C. Riley. They got precisely what they had coming to them.
The Solomons however, as far as foolish man-children comedies go, have it right. They're idiots but they're not abrasive idiots. Deep down they have an innocent faith in human kind and a can-do attitude about each of their endeavors. Their whole hearted approach to life is hard to not smile at.
They, of course, end up causing problems in the lives of those around them but unlike the Step Brothers, they don't selfishly take for granted that these problems will be fixed by others. They earnestly try to make amense when they realize they cause a problem and dopily charm you into giving them a second chance.
In all, The Brother Solomon is worth a shot and it's now on HBO (or one of the movie channels, not sure which one I caught it on...) it's even easier to justify watching the dopey comedy.
(Also, Kristen Wiig may be the best SNL player to come out of this generation. I'm excited to see where her burgeoning career takes her.).
