Review of The Brothers Solomon (2007) by Emeka W — 02 Aug 2010
I may be a film snob, but I like stupid movies, too, every once in awhile. This particular one was a bargain buy at Safeway (Five bucks for a movie with Will Arnett and Will Forte? Job from Arrested Development and McGruber? Hell yeah!) And unfortunately, it was pretty terrible, even with the handicap extra one-star rating I gave it for having such a funny cast outside of this film.
In essence, this film was a sub-par version of "Baby Mama", mixed in with the worst parts of "Dumb and Dumber", written and acted from a male perspective, which had no interest in infusing the slightest bit of reality into the plot, but rather focused on making jokes out of playing the theme song to "St. Elmo's Fire" in the background. All of the supporting characters were pointless and boring.
It did have several laugh-out-loud moments, I will admit. But it wasn't enough to make it even what I would classify as a guilty pleasure.
My recommendation? Go rent "Hot Rod", a similar movie in terms of type of humor, just a lot funnier overall, and with some of the same actors.
