Review of The Brothers Grimm (2005) by Dead A — 07 May 2011
As with most Terry Gilliam movies, Brothers Grimm is a visual feast but, that's about it. A weak script portrays the famous fairy tale authors as a couple of con men who are pressed into service against a real supernatural threat.
Gilliam has a really good cast but, fails to evoke the right performances out of them to support the demented whimsy that the director tries to give the film. And while normally quite adept at said demented whimsy, Gilliam fails to carry it off this time.
The film tries for an almost Monty Python-eseque tone at times but, it doesn't suit the material which needed a more subtle hand and a lot more fun. Fisher King proved Gilliam can do subtle and had he done this as a more straight forward adventure with good natured humor replacing some of the awkward slapstick this would have been a treat.
Instead it's a beautiful looking mess.
