Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Katie G — 16 Jan 2010
Leave it to Rian Johnson to be able to tickle my fancy, and craft an underapperciated gem. It's clear from this and the equally impressive Brick, the sort of influences that have made him want to make films.
While his first film was more of a downbeat film, on purpose, this one is whismical, almost to a fault. I meant that in a great way. It's a very fun, amusing comedy, with the con and the con within a con within a con, played straight enough to be interesting in it's own rights, then the quirks and comedy hit, and it feels right at home.
The cast is perfect, with the chemistry all the way around. The dialogue isn't as broiled as Brick, but it still has a bit of the typical lingo, but overall, this one is much more easy going, and free-form.
It's a testament to Johnson's directorial abilites, and characters that by the end, you know each character and their motivations, and who did what when, and it never being all that hard to follow, and no real strands or loose ends left to dangle.
