Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Deric E — 19 Jan 2010
For a storyline that had so much potential to be a blockbuster, it's interesting how the director managed to sap out a lot of energy from the hectic events onscreen. Everything about the movie seemed like fun from the previews and promotional media.
This tale of two brilliant conmen pulling of the biggest con of their career plays like a psychological drama. Add in the lack of explanations to any of the proceedings and you have here a very confusing movie. Any information on how the characters pull off their crazy heists or more insight into the antagonists would have been so helpful.
Rachel Weisz steals the scene while Rinko Kikuchi makes a lovable sidekick very reminiscent of Gwen Stefani's "Harajuku Girls". Great acting, but the film could have used more fluid and fast-paced direction and more character information.
