Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Geoffrey W — 19 Apr 2010
A con-man genre piece disguised as a comedy disguised as a love story disguised as a con-man piece.... and so on and so forth. The film will seem uneven to many, and probably not liked by half, but for those that enjoy off beat cinema (if you will) will find a good mix of laughs, great camera work, wonderful framing and texture, and a story with characters that only get better with each viewing.
Rian Johnson made a very unique film with Brick, mixing teen drama and film-noir detective fair, returns with another genre blender. This time taking the classic con-man mystery with its twists and turns and injects romantic comedy, slap-stick comedy, and character based comedy, and yet again it works.
Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz are especially good in this and Rinko Kikuchi is very funny. The score for the film is also worth mentioning as a highlight. Two films in and Rian Johnson is really making a case for himself as leader of the next generation of auteurs.
8/10.
