Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Megan P — 27 Nov 2010
Like the bastard child of a Wes Anderson film, "The Brothers Bloom" gives you a lot of highly eccentric, and exceedingly intelligent/witty characters all at once. But you can't help but be overwhelmed by the pompousness of the whole production, and it just muddles what is otherwise a very intriguing and highly original concept.
Think of it as being similar to Anderson's "Bottle Rocket," only with a more somber and far less emotionally resonant tone. The performances by Ruffalo, Brody, Weisz, and especially Rinko Kikuchi are all stellar, but they are hampered by a weak final act, and to put it bluntly, a stupid ending.
If you're in the mood to watch something quirky and original, this hits the spot; but on the whole, the effect is muted compared to what it could've been.
