Review of The Brothers Bloom (2008) by Zeke T — 31 Mar 2011
It definitely is an intriguing and entertaining and funny movie. But despite its entertainment, its attempts at something substantial are unconvincing. There are so many times where you're tossed and turned by the "cons" that it is difficult to actually care for the characters.
The relationship between the brothers wasn't well developed in my opinion, so I hardly felt any emotional pull for them. I also didn't feel much between Bloom and Penelope. The film tries to make Penelope so eccentric and strange that it's difficult to actually care for the human in her.
And it's not just her. It seems that the film as a whole, with all the cons and tricks, is trying too hard to be creative and strange that it abandons its emotional substance. Perhaps it's not the cons and tricks that are the problem.
In fact, it's pretty obvious that the director intended for the viewer to be tossed and turned quite a bit. But something with the way it played out, and the way I found myself not caring a whole lot for the characters, definitely made the movie sub-par for me.
