Review of The Brood (1979) by Michael F — 27 Jun 2009
Cronenberg was going through a divorce and custody battle when he created this gem. And it shows. A father finds that his daughter has been beaten while visiting her mother at a psychiatric retreat. The patients at this facility are learning to release their rage through an experimental treatment called psychoplasmics.
As the mother gets better more people end up being murdered by mutant demon children (which made me think of DON'T LOOK NOW). Yay! The twist isn't a surprise and the acting is so-so, but the movie is just so creepy it works.
The final showdown between the mother and father definitely makes up for any lulls. Man, I love David Cronenberg.
