Review of The Bronze (2016) by Andrew M — 20 Mar 2016
This may be one of the most obnoxious comedies I've ever seen. That could work as a dark comedy if everyone acted obnoxious, but no, it's really only Melissa Rauch's character who does. For the vast majority of the movie, she's playing a late 20s adult who's still acting like a stereotypical, spoiled, self-entitled teenager -- and that's the entirety of the joke.
I don't find that funny. Supposedly she's supposed to have grown out of it in the end by training an up-and-comer gymnast who may be even better, but at the end all that really happens is she's a bit less spoiled and selfish, but somehow just as obnoxious.
She's just LESS despicable than the other girl (spoiler, oh who cares!) because at least she stuck around town rather than bailing after her win. A couple of scenes where she's being more supportive don't really mean much (as in the end she's doing it for money), and the honestly kind of amusing sex scene is ruined by the good hearted guy witnessing it.
Add on one other plot twist that you can probably see coming a mile away and this is one comedy that fails to generate any laughs.
