Review of The Bronze (2016) by Bart G — 22 Mar 2016
I'm sure like many of you, I'm a huge fan of the Big Bang Theory. I watch it religiously and have never missed an episode. Melissa Rauch's Bernadette brings so much to the show and I love her character.
However, Bernadette -- though sassy and headstrong -- has that super sweet voice and adorable little persona. I was kind of concerned that this wouldn't translate well into what I expected to be a raunchy, R rated comedy.
Luckily, there isn't a trace of Bernadette anywhere in this film. Like the true actress and comedienne she is, Melissa created a completely new character in Hope -- one who is crass, sexually dysfunctional, and unabashedly unlikable.
I didn't feel like this was forced at all, like an intentional disassociation with Bernadette. Rauch, instead, just created the perfect character to tell what in the end is a heartwarming story completely disguised by wonderfully heinous language.
I really enjoyed this film, it was like an R rated Stick It (which is, admittedly, a guilty pleasure film). I found myself laughing a lot more than I thought I would and almost crying towards the end.
It's a film with heart, but most importantly, it's a film that lets us know Melissa isn't some one trick, sweet as pie pony. She has a depth to her comedy, albeit one with sophomoric humor at times.
Who doesn't like a bit of sophomoric humor every now and then, with a sex scene reminiscent of every R rated 80s comedy I watched growing up? I certainly loved it -- all of it.
