Review of The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) by Manuel M — 02 Feb 2014
Nominated for the Best film not in the English language Oscar, this Belgian production tells the story of the relationship of Elise and Diddier. It's told out of sequence starting with their daughter being diagnosed with cancer, but flashes back to happier times from when they first met to a rather amusing wedding.
Rather a sombre tale and quite melodramatic at times, but the cast is superb and the delineated sequence allows the tone to not be complete bummer!
Much like Inside Llewyn Davis, it is the music that elevates the film greatly. The excellent bluegrass soundtrack accompanies the story brilliantly.
