Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Andrew U — 27 Apr 2008
Famous for being an early sound film, the first full fledged musical and the 2nd Best Picture winner - nevertheless a pretty crappy movie. I don't see why director Harry Beaumont felt the need to throw out all the lessons learnt in silent film by masters like Lang and Murnau and start from scratch with dull uninventive film-making.
It was as if he was relying solely on the fact that this film had sound and chucked out all other aesthetic considerations.
