Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Joe L — 04 Dec 2008
A great example of how film took a huge step back after the addition of sound. this film bears some similarity to the first silents in that the audience is captivated by the mere presence of the technology; in the silents it was scenery, in the talkies it's just talking.
broadway melody is the first lumbering step towards understanding the new language of film. that said, there are plenty of plucky-fun snappy-talk moments, and one ridiculous, unintentionally funny crying scene that was the world's first 'oscar clip.
' was interesting to watch because it is so deeply referenced in 'singin' in the rain.'.
