Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Jesse R — 26 Dec 2008
Sadly, this one hasn't aged well. Trite melodrama with creaky acting--with the exception of Bessie Love, who's a total pleasure to watch, and if you enjoy films from this period, I recommend you see it for her.
(And the performances of the titular song pale in comparison to James Cagney's rendition in "Yankee Doodle Dandy.") However, if you rent the DVD version of the film, the short film "Dogway Melody" is included--and is freaking hilarious.
You couldn't get away with a production like that given the current (and justified) state of animal rights activism. And you need to see a Boston terrier perform "Mammy" a la Al Jolson and chorus lines of raincoat-clad dogs.
Yes, yes you do.
