Review of The Bridges of Madison County (1995) by Will D — 01 Jun 2008
Who would have thought, after all the gritty violent crime and western movies Clint Eastwood had both starred in and helmed as a director, he could successfully pull of a complete 180 genre change. But guess what, as both actor and director, Clint Eastwood does a fabulous job of bringing this bittersweet love story to life.
Meryl Streep is outstanding in her Oscar nominated role as a 1960's Iowa housewife home alone for the weekend who has a chance encounter with Eastwood's traveling photographer. Eastwood's subtle directing style suits this film perfectly, we really get a sense of not only the unique time and place, but also the love and hearbreak that accompany it.
Very well done, what big screen romances should be like. That climactic scene in the rain is unbelievably gutwrenching.
