Review of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) by Min K — 13 May 2009
Truly a great film. Superb writing with great character development. Amazing cinematography with choice location footage. Terribly engrossing portrayals by Holden, Guiness, Hawkins and Hayakawa - each playing four perfectly flawed men trying to fulfill their orders and stick to their convictions in the midst of chaos of war.
The score, of course, is quite memorable. I went "Hm..." to myself more than once during the course of this film, because the interactions of the large personalities on-screen really brings up some difficult questions of personal morality, war and devotion to country.
All of these things helped me overlook the over-exoticized Asian women and the seemingly pointless love-plots. But it's Bill Holden - he's gotta have a dame somewhere in the film.
